Just back from an action packed long weekend in Portland Oregon attending the Garden Bloggers Fling 2014, #GBFling14. We toured 17 gardens in 3 days and I met wonderful people from all over the globe. The Portland hosts were amazing, I would move to Portland in a heart beat. In honor of Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day, I thought I would share some beautiful blooms from Portland.

A sleepy gnome hiding in the sedum at JJ De Sousa Gardens
I am replete and inspired but also exhausted. I feel like this sleepy gnome using the tree to hold himself up!

The Ernst purple blooms are eryngium of some sort. Beautiful shots! Happy bloom day!

Thank you! I talked to the owner at Cistus Nursery and they don’t actually sell the Macleaya but he said he would dig some up and sell it to me. I will wait till fall when it is cooler to ship to Houston.

Great post! Thanks for identifying some of the plants I was wondering about. I looked a few of them up and I see why we don’t grow them here in Central Texas. Apparently, they need moist soils and my soils are dry as a bone. Oh well, time to make a trip to Barton Springs Nursery and embrace the local flora. I am going to try those eryngium though. I already bought 4.

Hi Ally, we each have something that we wish we could grow and can’t, I lust for Japanese Fountain grass : ) I do know you can build a deeper soil profile with compost and seaweed will help soil retain moisture.

Lovely pictures of some great plants.You obviously had a great time, I wish there was something like that in Europe.
Macleaya cordata is a great plant but it can be invasive, it travels in the same way as bamboo.

Fantastic photos, Laurin! I’ve never seen crocosmia as tall and lovely as the plants in Portland, and those blue hydrangeas were just amazing. I was definitely like that gnome for a full day after getting home:)
