Central Texas Gardener TV show, Dee Nash, growing your own food, The 20-30 Something Garden Guide
A few months back I found out about a great T.V. program, Central Texas Gardener. Since hearing about it I have been watching it via YouTube and I thought I should share. You can subscribe via YouTube and they will send you and email announcing each new show . While Houston is not central Texas much of the information still applies. I have enjoyed interviews with well know gardeners from around the state and country. Last week they interviewed Dee Nash author of the 20-30 Something Garden Guide. This is a great book that we recommend to our beginning gardening clients. Here is a link to an early post I did after meeting Dee in Austin in May. Now on to the show! Enjoy : )
Happy Gardening!
Thanks for sharing, is your weather considered sub-tropical, or temperate?

Hi Maria, it is suppose to sub-tropical but for the last 5 years we have been getting a few hard freezes ever other winter or so. Last winter we got down to 18 degrees over night. So I am very careful what I put in my designs. Some plants might freeze to the ground but will return. I am using more deciduous plants these days too! I am in zone 9a but have heard talk that it is more like 8b recently. People are moving away from tender perennials and tropicals. As a designer the one thing every client asks for in low maintenance : )

The same happens with marine coastal gardens. They have to be plants that tolerate extreme coastal winds and be salt tolerant. Right now we have a hurricane watch in place, so the preliminary plants here on the beach are sea grape shrubs, tropical almond trees, coconut palm trees, and Thespesia pupurea (these are exclusively tropical), and others. There are ornamental shrubs such as Jasmine and a shrub called “Carissa” that’s nearly identical to real Jasmine. Jasmine is salt tolerant, and so is the Christmas Palm, the Yuca, and Bougainvilleas. There are also beach vines that grow right on the sand.
